As you may have heard, Adam Yauch (MCA) from the band Beasie Boys, recently announced that he had a cancerous tumor in his salavary gland and lymph node. The Beasie Boys canceled their upcoming shows and postponed their upcoming album release.

Yauch has just announced that he underwent the surgery and is “rapidly recovering.” He’s now at home with his family and has said that he’s avoiding taking the painkillers that would slow the recovery process. The next phase of treatment includes radiation, five days a week, for seven weeks.

YAUCH: Just wanted to thank them (Coldplay, Jay-Z, Karen O and Q-Tip) and everyone else who sent positive thoughts my way. I do think that all of the well wishes have contributed to the fact that my treatment and recovery are going well.

The web site PrayForACureForCancer.com is busy spending money putting up billboards to promote themselves. The site states, “Wouldn’t it be amazing to have millions praying for a cure?” I say, wouldn’t it be better to spend the money you’ve wasted on billboards on cancer research? They currently have 15 billboards up. The rate they’re paying, according to their site, is $6,000 per year. That’s $90,000 that could have gone directly toward finding a cure.

The web site also has the following statement:

Please partner with us and support this plea for prayer. Not only will it remind people to pray for a cure, the people afflicted by it and the researchers working so hard to find a cure, but it will also be a witness for our Lord… the One that heals us.

I really don’t think people who pray need a reminder, and many feel that it doesn’t send the right message about obtaining proper medical treatment.

UPDATE: Apparently PrayForACureForCancer.com is down now, displaying an “Under Construction” message.

Cancer patients and survivors have some of the most challenging experiences with our health care system, at a time in their lives when they are most vulnerable.

Severe underfunding creates huge gaps in access to early detection and treatment services. Gaps in heath insurance plans result in high out-of-pocket costs. And cancer survivors often have difficulty finding affordable health insurance because they have a “pre-existing” condition.

Right now, President Obama and Congress are moving quickly on health care reform legislation. It’s up to us to make sure the needs of cancer patients are all included in the final health care package. This means ensuring access to affordable, high-quality insurance for all, an increased focus on early detection, and protections from financial hardship for people fighting cancer.

Members of the U.S. House are expected to head home for the August recess on Friday, July 31 and the Senate will follow a week later, which means the real fight has just begun. Over the recess our lawmakers will finalize their health care reform priorities and we have a small window to make sure the needs of cancer patients are at the top of their lists.

I signed the Komen Advocacy Alliance petition urging my lawmakers to support health care reform that considers the needs of people fighting cancer. Will you join me?

It’s easy to do, just click the link below and add your voice to the call:
